Rescues At Sea

On 17/06/07 whilst on passage from Port Said to Jebel Ali, the MV Bavaria Express received a distress alert. At 04:25 GMT she altered her course and headed for the vessel in distress, the cement carrier MV “Andria”.
At 08:00 GMT radio contact was established with the Andria and the Bavaria Express manoeuvred into the rescue area and prepared to launch the rescue boat.

Around this time the Hibiya Park had also received a distress message and was also proceeding to the vessel in distress.

The Andria was sinking and at 09:14 the Bavaria Express lowered her rescue boat into the water.

At 11:00 the Hibiya Park arrived on scene and requested instructions from the on scene co-ordinator, the Bavaria Express. At this point however the rescue operation was underway. By 12:55 all 9 crew members of the Andria (7 Indian and 2 Pakistani) were taken into the rescue boat which was in the process of being recovered back on board the Bavaria Express.

The Hibiya Park’s services were not required and so she was instructed to continue her voyage.
All crew were found to be in good state of health and required no medical assistance. The Bavaria Express continued her voyage to Jebel Ali.

The Master and crew of the Andria were well prepared and brought all the ships documents and certificates with them, which helped in dealing with the authorities.

With the help of Our P&I club’s correspondent contact was made with the Andria’s Owners, the Manning agents of the rescued crew and the Andria’s P&I correspondents. All formalities were cleared without any problem in Jebel Ali.

The crew of both ships were commended, with a specific mention to the Bavaria Express’ rescue boat crew who carried out a successful rescue in a swell of 4 – 5 meters.
